Now the titles, Best Phone Ever and Phone of the Year, are pretty much the same thing. Each successive mobile phone model works to outdo the last, resulting in a new Best Phone Everevery year. But this could actually be the best phone ever in a nostalgic sense. The type of phone that you remember in a decade and look back on with fond memories; the type that will still hold value in twenty years time as a technological antique; the type that will be used in years to come as a symbol of mobile technology in our time.
Perhaps we ought to then refer to the title as Our Favourite Phone Ever.
There are certain prerequisites required for a phone to be heralded with such honour.
Design
The first is design; as phones aren’t simply technological devices tailored for our convenience but also – rather sadly almost – fashion accessories.
Samsung seemed to have grasped this concept superbly. The S3 is beauty at its very finest, with a stylish and rounded exterior, complimented perfectly with a super AMOLED HD screen.
This is one of those phones you’re always proud to bring out; a possession that emits a sense of happiness when you look at it.
Technology
Now let’s move unto the good stuff. As much as image holds significance in establishing an aesthetical attachment to a device, it is technology which makes a mobile phone most useful; and utility which makes it most memorable.
The Galaxy S3 holds the fastest browser speed on the market, and a quad-core processor of 1.4GHz. It also has a microSIM port allowing a user to enjoy a 126GB capacity.
An 8MP camera, with a 20-shot burst mode will allow users to capture memories in high quality. In addition, the S3’s introduction of near field communication (NCF) technology will enable high speed file transfer operating at up to 300Mbps.
No wonder S3 deals are currently trumping other mobile phone offers.
The Stumbling Block
While bettering Apple’s iPhone 4S, the S3 does have one major stumbling block in its pursuit of the coveted Favourite Phone Ever award. Referred to as the iPhone 5 – in want of an official name – Apple’s next smartphone release is the only thing lying between the S3 and historical superstardom.
The scary thing is… we don’t quite yet know what features the iPhone 5 will boast.
