Interview tips for freshers

How should you prepare? How can you sell yourself best?

Match your skills to the job specification
Interviews often start with an open question such as - tell me about yourself. Many candidates fall into the trap of describing their life story or rambling. Start with the present and explain why you are qualified for the position.

Do your homework
Research the company. Its website, press releases and news give you a good insight into its goals and objectives which you can use to ask questions and tie into your answers.

Research your industry
Demonstrating you know what's going on in a particular industry is great - ask questions about trends, how the company plans to respond and link your experiences to them.

Practise your interview technique
Ask friends to do mock-interviews with you to identify areas to work on.

Prepare examples
Employers want concrete examples to demonstrate your skills and experience. Have at least two examples prepared for each skill area in the job specification and focus on the actions you took and the results you achieved.

Decide what you're wearing
You don't want to waste vital preparation time choosing your outfit or going to the dry cleaners, so plan in advance.

Plan your route
Nothing looks worse than an interviewee who arrives late or gets lost. Try to get there 15 minutes early.

If in doubt, ask for clarification
Not only does this stop you from wasting their time, but it demonstrates confidence.

Imagine you're selling a product
Apply the rules to selling yourself in the interview.

Value yourself
It's easy to get nervous before interviews but try to keep calm and be as natural as possible.

Leadership qualities for success at work

Leadership was earlier defined by a person's traits or abilities and it was believed that strong, decisive, clear, passionate and charismatic people make for good leaders. Scholars quickly learned that traits alone are not sufficient, bringing in the idea of situational leadership - certain people, with specific traits, in particular situations make good leaders. However, even this approach failed to articulate the definition of leadership. Today's leaders need to have a global mindset, an array of strategic and tacticalskills, task and relational competence. As Fons Trompenaars, a renowned Dutch organisational theorist and author in the field of cross-cultural communication once said: "We have found that the only competence that truly matters is the competence to reconcile dilemmas or to integrate opposites - not by compromise, not by giving in to the other, but by seeking optimal outcomes by integrating opposites."

Global business across national cultures can be fraught with challenges. However, strategic and skillful communication is at the heart of global success. Indians, on an average, tend to speak indirectly and consider relationships just as important as or more important than the task at hand. Speaking succinctly and putting relational issues as secondary to work are essential to foster effective communication strategies. Additionally, it is equally important for one to communicate across organisational hierarchies, to be an effective leader.

Best ways to impress your boss

- Be on time to work everyday, if not early. Bosses always have a way of keeping a watch over everyone at work.

- When work is being delegated, instead of waiting for someone else to hand you over a task, take initiative by yourself, especially in your boss' presence.

- If there's some issue arising at the work place, brainstorm and offer solutions. You may not give the perfect solution but at least your boss will know that you are making efforts to deal with the crisis.

- Don't be in a hurry to leave the office after completing your shift. Make efforts like joining some professional courses related to work and willingness to learn more about the company. This will help you score brownie points in terms of good impressions on your boss.

- Always maintain a positive and cheery attitude, even when others seem gloomy and lethargic. Staying upbeat and cheerful will lighten up your workplace environment, making you a hero in the eyes of your boss.

Are you stuck in the wrong job?

No social life

You have to put your best in whatever you do. There are times when you are expected to take on extra tasks or pitch in to finish up something on a tight deadline. But if you can't remember the last time you met your friends or went out on a family outing, you might want to opt for a job that consumes a little lesser time. Your work might be giving you the desired job satisfaction but having no life outside the office is unhealthy and can eventually lead to stress and anxiety.

You dream about quitting

If you're already at the stage of wishing for a new job or even thinking about doing anything but what you're doing, take those thoughts seriously and figure out what you want to do next. You need to be proactive when it comes to your career. Research on the vacancies at various companies, polish your resume, and start applying for anything intriguing that comes up.

Lack of opportunities to grow

At some work places, you might like the kind of work you are doing and the kind of people you're working with but there's just no room to climb the ladder. That might be OK for a while, but after a point you might want to get better at your job. If you're already at the top of where you can go in your company but have started to crave something more, look at your current job as a stepping stone and resume-builder rather than somewhere you have to stay for good. If you're not feeling challenged, you're just going to end up feeling unhappy.

Using flirtation during a negotiation appears to create better economic outcomes for women, a new study has found.

Female negotiators only had an advantage if the flirtatiousness is perceived as above and beyond friendliness.

Researchers examined "feminine charm" in negotiations through four different experiments, looking at the balance between friendliness and flirtatiousness.
